Lovely detail and texture in the rocks which as you say works well as a B&W which the action has done quite well

Your intuition for bw is perfect for this shot as the valleys adn crevasses lend themselves well to contrast and light. I almost long to see this picture in color to appreciate the different hues of the sands.
