Stag beetle
A stag beetle on a tree, in Lobau. These interesting insects became very rare. In Lobau (Vienna), there used to be a lot of them more than ten years ago - this is the first one i have seen since 15 years! They only live 4 to 6 weeks in the beetle-state, while the whole lifetime is about 5 to 8 years as larva.

Thanks for your comment, Fons. I read on the net that they can reach 7,5cm in lenght, while sometimes the horns make up half of the entire lenght of the beetle. It is interesting and fun to watch two stag beetles fighting. The stronger one is able to actually throw his opponent a few centimeters. Seen this on tv, but not in reality.
