Lake Alice Osprey
Lake Alice - UF Campus After a successful plunge into the lake to snatch its lunch (behind my back!) the osprey flew to a lofty branch for some fish'n'chips (sans chips). As fate would have it the osprey perched itself on a branch where the only clear view I had of it meant I was also looking almost directly into the sun (curses!!!). I experimented with ESP, center-weighted and spot metering. This photo (spot meter) was the only image where we made eye contact.

Leon,
Spot metering is for me a must , can't explain why but I found out for me it's the best way of handle the light .
Spot your subject do your metering and change your camera directions to the view ( cutout) you want to have with the shutter pressed halfway ...
Many times I tried ESP and still I came to the same result as described above...
Can you imagine you would have done a metering on the the light leafs back lit by the sun...the Osprey would have been totally dark ...
So compliment with your settings ....worked out pretty good.....;-))
Best regards...............Fons

Lake Alice Osprey
Fons -
Thanks again! And agreed - I got my best results using the spot meter, but still, I had to be careful not to take my reading off of 'all dark' or 'all light' subject matter, and it wasn't easy getting an 'average' spot meter reading with ~half the meter sensing area over light, the other half on a dark portion of the bird.
Just the same I did try center-weighted and ESP - but in both cases I increased the EV = +1.3 up to +2.0 and shot a lot - like I didn't have to worry about buying film :-)
