Leon Plympton BUTTERFLY - 001

This butterfly (Monarch? // Viceroy?) was resting on this leaf for quite some time. Normally speaking it should have been an easy shot; however, it was rather windy, and everything (the leaf, the butterfly et cetera) was rocking and rolling. Also - the butterfly would open and close its wings, so perfect timing was essential to catch the wings in their horizontal position, so what might appear to have been a simple 'snapshot' wasn't quite so simple.

Leon Plympton BUTTERFLY - 002

This butterfly was captured on Paynes Prairie, where I generally go to photograph larger critters.

The topside of the wings have coloring quite like a Monarch butterfly, but with different patterns; the underside colors are several shades lighter than the topside and the pattern of the colors is nothing like the topside.

Anyone out there know what kind of butterfly this is? If so, please let me know because I sure don't know.

Ciao!
