high contrast

IMO your b/w shots have burned out highlights and blocked up shadows. To me this suggests that the contrast of the scene was to great for the sensor to record. There are several options available including shooting the original files in raw, compressing the contrast in photoshop, using the highlight/shadow feature in photoshop CS or CS2 or selecting to have details in either the hightlights or the shapdows and adjusting the exposure and postprocessing accordingly.
