This memorial is to the Carters and their horses who worked the busy Irvine Harbour in the 18th Century. In its time Irvine was the second most important Scottish port . In 1753 the Carters Society was formally constituted with 106 members. The Carter and his horse would pull small carts with goods or coal weighing as much as eight hundredweights (over 400 Kg).
