some potential here and I realise there is some processing because of the heavy sky - I'm not against that but think it needs to be balanced by equally heavy processing of the foreground which needs to be darker, otherwise it looks unbalanced (to me)

I, too, believe there is potential in this idea.

The unbalanced look, in my opinion, comes in part from violation of the rule-of-thirds, and, I think, the distracting clump of trees on the left side of the frame.

Zoom in to eliminate the clump of trees and to enlarge the size of the lone tree, and tilt up, placing the horizon on the lower-third horizontal line.

I like your processing and the contrast between the dark sky and the brightness of the field.
