SPLASH!!!

I turn; an osprey rises from the lake, its wings fanning a shower below, a fish gripped in its talons - gasping, rising-rising upward click-click-click-click ... .

Oh - how I wish I'd seen this bird coming and had a chance to prepare for the entire sequence - maybe next time.

Thanks so much. Actually, I didn't mention it before but this was the second 'splash' in 30 minutes or so; both assaults from above were in different parts of the lake. After the first attack (which ended up empty handed taloned?) the bird soared upwards and then disappeared into the trees that line the northern bank of the lake. I watched for several minutes but it just didn't return, and so I began looking for other critters to shoot.

And then, out of the blue 'splash' again. It would have been so nice to be able to follow the dive with 'continuous' auto-focus all the while - into the water and then back into the wild blue yonder. In both cases I honestly can't tell you where in the sky the bird came from.

As you can see, once again I performed a 50% crop in order to bring the bird closer. The new ZD 70-300mm is due to be released this fall (I'm told) and I can't wait. Sure, I'd prefer the ZD 50-200mm but at twice the price I'm not sure I want to dig that deep into my pockets.
