Ramasubramaniyan Krishnamoorthy Dying Beauty

Found this butterfly hurt and lying on the ground. All we could do was to pick it up and leave it on the compound to make sure it does not get crushed under people's feet..

Olympus E-300 and 10 stop ND filter. 30 Sec f5.6 @ iso 100

Bruce Thomas E-330 Color Balance (AUTO WB) I have not been too pleased with the AUTO WB in my E420. Shot this early this AM with my E-330 and 11-22mm lens and I think it's ALARMINGLY GOOD Auto WB...

What do you think?

Bruce Thomas E-420 - Fountain Creek, Colorado Springs

This is the new Olympus E-420 and 14-42mm Kit Lens on tripod with Polarizer and one ND filter. Notice in the upper right you can see the filter holder. You do not see the filter holder in the optical viewfinder. You must remember to zoom out a mm to 15mm (instead of the min 14mm) in order to not to see the filter holder (this does NOT happen on the older 14-45mm Kit lens). As you can see, this one is much better than previous attempts to use Polar + ND filters. It sems you must increase exposure a BUNCH to compensate for the filtration which appears to trick the meter. This one is at +1.3 stops!! Once you add the exposure, color balance comes back to a more natural color. It's still "too amber". "Amber" is one of the new WB adjustments on the E-420. I have set the "Amber" to -2 globally. Without filters, this works pretty well for outdoor AUTO WB shots. Looks like _with_ filters, "Amber" can be set to -3 or even -4...

Bruce Thomas E-420 does not like ND filters

This is resized to 800x600, otherwise is straight out of the OLY E-420 camera.

I like to shoot water at slow shutter speeds and many times the time of day that I am available, requires the use of some ND filters to get that slow shutter speed.

The first serious shoot with the new Olympus E-420, I shot some water at high noon, used (2) -3 stop ND filters. The result was REALLY BAD!! So I thought...what the heck, and tested on a tripod back at home. Judging via the LCD only, it looked like the E-420 would tolerate ONE ND filter without ruining the WB but not two.

Back out into the field in the evening where I needed one ND filter to get the shutter speeds I desired, (also used "Shade" WB, not AUTO). In the field, on the LCD, this shot looked REALLY GREAT!! I was pleased.

Back home, and everything is approx 1/2 as crappy as it was when I used the TWO ND filters!!!

My conclusion is that I won't be able to use this camera for any filterized shootin'...and is in effect a Point-n-shoot dSLR...

If you NEVER use filters, you'll love this little camera. If you do shoot via filters on a regular basis, you'll HATE this little camera.

I do exactly the same shots with the E-330 on a regular basis, and I have nothing but outstanding results...

The E-420 will have to be sold...I cannot deal with this behaviour.

Bruce Thomas E-420 image from RAW (ISO 800) I have not been pleased with the Olympus E-420's internal JPG engine. But, if your willing to shoot RAW images and process from there...it does a nice job.

This is ISO 800...
