Here is the doorkeeper of the Hornet's house.

The hornets have their nest in a bird's nesting box on our house wall and I have made a rig so that I can take images of them. An interesting observation is that they always have a 'doorkeeper' that is guarding the entrance. This is a portrait of the doorkeeper taken at an instant when it looked like it was wondering why I hadn't left yet...

Cheers, Jens.

Various: Technical: I used a macro setup that I have started to like very much: Olympus E-1 with a Zuiko Digital 50-200 zoom and a Zuiko digital 1.4x teleconverter plus a Canon 500D achromatic close-up lens (+2 dpt). It allows me to go from M=0.9x to M=0.16x without moving the camera (sensor-subject distance =62 cm). Here the zoom was set to 283 mm and the nominal aperture was f/16. However, with the 500D close-up lens these values change to 180 mm focal length and f/11.

Adrie,

No, that is true and it will always be very shallow at this magnification which is 0.9. However, I think that you are right in your observation that is is a bit shallower DOF than expected. The reason is that that the real focal length is shorter than indicated in the EXIF. The value F/11 is based on calculations using the nominal values as read in EXIF data: Focal length 283 mm and F/16.

However, the true focal length of modern zoom lenses with internal focussing is often considerably shorter than what is written on the lens or in the EXIF when they are focussed close to their closest distance. So, assuming that the real focal length is 200 mm instead of 283 mm would mean that the focal length with the 500D in this case would be 142 mm and the aperture would become f/8. Seems reasonable.

Cheers, Jens.
