Great Blue Heron - 16
Safe Landing - This GBH had been on the far side of a canal when I arrived on the prairie with my E-1 and a ZD 40-150mm. While I was preoccupied with an alligator the GBH silently launched itself, heading for a small floating island near the middle of the canal. I was able to make this capture an instant after the GBH's feet made contact with the floating vegetation. I was about to find out that these floating islands are ideal for GBHs to stalk their prey.

Thanks. It was a mighty hot day on the prairie, but there was plenty of action.

Beautiful shot Leon. I like it, the colors, the sharpness and the "curtain" of acuatic plants in the background. Best regards, Ricardo

Ricardo -
Thank You - Very Much!
I was actually quite surprised when this GBH flew from the relative safety on the far side of the canal to get this close to me. I wish I'd caught it in flight as it flared its wings just before touch-down. It wasn't long after I took this shot that I found out how come it flew to this floating vegetative island; the fishing seems to be much better in the deeper water.

A perfectly timed shot Leon! You have captured awesome details of the plumage that blends beautifully with the background.
My greetings for the New Year 2011.
