Florida gopher tortoise

I interupted this Florida gopher tortoise while he was munching on grass. He was too low to use my tripod, so I pressed the camera firmly to the ground in order eliminate vibration and obtain the sharpest focus. After I finished taking this macro, the tortoise commenced to finishing his lawn salad as if I had never been there.

Florida gopher tortoise

Joe -

A great capture of this endangered species. This image is extremely sharp; just look at the small bubbles on the rim of its eye.

BTW: Is that your reflection in its eye? It also looks like a white building in the background under a beautiful blue sky.

Let me guess, in real life the shell is ~9-10 inches in length?

Thanks for the comments Leon. Yes, that is a reflection of me in the eye. The white object is the reflection of a travel-trailer parked on the lawn where the tortoise was feeding. It was a beautiful, cloudless day at the time. The photo was made in the shade of a tree.

Thanks for the comments Adrie. Yes, the 8080 is a great camera but it has its limitations. I hope someday to upgrade to a digital SLR which will afford me a higher f-stop for greater depth of field.

> 8080 F8 is not the same of a SLR F8.0.
At the same distance i think 8080 give more DOF than other SLR; with a compact camera you can?t defocus background unless you shoot macro mode, but ou can do it with a SLR.
With a DSLR you can increase the distance to the subject, so you increase DOF.
Great shot anyway.
