WOW, great shot randall, the all light around the girl creates an atmosphere kind a bit scary! The all contrast also very good! Well done.
Best regards

Welding Girl

Thank you Pedro & Shelley. To answer your questions Shelley, she has been welding for 17+ years doing the same Industrial type jobs as her male counterparts. She has also taught welding in Laval-Montreal area. The piece that she is welding here in the shot is just a scrap bit of metal for the photo shoot. In fact I kept asking her to get more sparks, only to find out that in welding that?s not what one wants! As for the Butterfly decals, that is her little ?trademark? to show that there is a gal under that helmet. Oh and speaking about helmets, that is a state of the art digital welders helmet! When switched on, this helmet lens allows one to view the room and automatically dims when welding..cool eh!

So it made it!? I guess I will join the bandwagon - it is a nice image indeed! Deserves all ten - on composition, exposure, overall tonality, and above all your own enthusiasm to bring up and share the great work you always do.

Was again sometime ago you landed on the TOP IMAGE board, well this shot deserves it, although as you already said , I also would have liked a few more sparks....;-)

Superb shot Randall, this would have been a difficult shot to get the exposure right as I know how intense the light is that is produced when welding, I love the reflection in the screen, you can imagine the concentration from the girl doing her work, the greens, blues and greys from the steelwork give a great overall atmosphere, a well deserved 10
Cheers Steve

Hi Steve, Your right about that Arc light being intense! It reminded me of a shoot that I did years ago where I used eight Pro-Foto 2400ws generators for a total of 19,200ws. Two 9600ws heads into two six-foot umbrellas were used. The noise and power were about the same then as now! What surprised me on the ?Welding Girl? shoot was how easy it was to balance the flash units with such an intense light source and also how well the 5050 performed. I set the shot up with the camera on a tripod and plugged into A/C, so that the monitor would stay on and not go into slumber mode at an inopportune moment. Then wearing safety glasses I only viewed subject through the monitor, and even then for brief moments only. Again I would like to thank you all for your kind comments and ratings.

Having been a very good welder myself in my youth, I know just how good a job you did on this. I'm totally amazed. The kind of welder she is using (MIG = Metal Inert Gas) doesn't make any smoke that would absorb some of the light like usual arc (stick) welding would.

Simply amazing.
