The Skate The Bay International Speed Skating Marathon was held here on Irondequoit Bay this past weekend. I went with a group of friends to see what it was all about and I was able to capture this skater in a reasonably sharp image. He was the lead skater and was well ahead of all the competition. I've seen a lot of pictures from the competition of these speedskaters and noticed no fine details in the faces of the skaters. In contrast my Olympus equipment even lets me see the 5 o'clock shadow on this skater's face. This is my first effort at any kind of sport related photography.

Good timing

It's amazing what you managed to do. The skater is perfectly framed and in focus - you pressed the shutter in exactly the right instant. I guess you had a lot of light, since you took this shot at ISO 100 and 1/640s. You might experiment for the future with some motion blur or with camera panning (which however only makes sense if the background has some structure).
